CENTERVILLE — Four Northmont wrestlers took 1st place at the Division I sectional tournament at Centerville High School held Friday and Saturday and a total of eight Thunderbolts qualified for the district tournament.
Freshman Andrew Knick continued his outstanding season by scoring an 8-0 major decision over Cristian Chavez (18-7) of Lakota East to win the title match in the 113 pound weight class. The victory was Knick’s 36th win of the season.
After a first round bye Knick pinned Kaileigh Nuessgen of Beavercreek during the quarterfinal in 1:57. He also pinned Caleb Schroer of Sidney in the semifinal in 46 seconds.
Senior Chad Craft picked up his 35th win by scoring a 17-1 technical fall against David Hasty (27-12) of Stebbins to win the 120 pound title match. After a first round bye Chad pinned Jacob Pfander of Beavercreek in 28 seconds during the quarterfinal match. In the semifinal he also pinned Alex Epstein of Lakota East in 1:44.
Senior Chase Craft also won the 126 pound weight class title by scoring a 12-4 major decision over senior Colin Neuner (29-14) of Beavercreek to earn his 38th victory of the season. In the tournament’s first round Chase pinned Zack Hicks of Sidney in 1:52. In the quarterfinal Chase pinned Dagan Lambert of Fairborn in 1:53. In the semifinal match he scored a 2-0 decision over Ryan Whitten of Stebbins.
Sophomore Gabe Newburg picked up his 30th victory of the season by scoring a 5-1 decision over Caleb Harris (24-5) of Lakota West to win the 182 pound championship. After a first round bye Newburg pinned Isaac Brown of Troy in 2:35 during the quarterfinal match. In the semifinal he scored a 5-2 decision over Drew Katona of Lakota East.
Junior Dylan Moran placed second overall after losing to junior Joe Cochran (34-3) of Springfield in the 195 pound title bout. After a first round bye Moran scored a 6-0 decision over Aaron Weiser of Beavercreek in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal match Moran won in overtime with a 7-5 decision against Seth Campbell of Miamisburg.
Senior Chuck Saul also placed second losing by a fall in 2:29 to Jon Spaulding (33-4) of Lakota East in the finals of the heavyweight match. After a first round bye Saul pinned Dallas Johnson of Fairborn in 1:11 during the quarterfinal. In the semifinal Saul pinned Jon Hardin of Miamisburg in 1:33.
Senior Josh Winston placed third in the 160 pound weight class by scoring a 3-2 decision over Brandon Metz (22-10) of Little Miami. After a first round bye Winston scored a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinal match against Drew Henson of Lakota East. In the semifinal he lost a 13-4 major decision to Shane Shoop of Troy. In the consolation semifinal Winston pinned Jordan Dillon of Beavercreek (4:42) to earn the right to advance to the third place match.
Sophomore Bryan Heyward placed fourth in the 220 pound weight class losing by a 19-4 technical fall to Kemal Sarvalov (33-8) of Lakota East. In the first round of the tournament Heyward pinned Brandon Henn of Tecumseh at the 4:31 mark. During the quarterfinal he scored a 5-4 decision over Ben Blevins of Little Miami. During the semifinal Heyward lost by a fall (1:45) to Javon Purk of Sidney. In the consolation semifinal Heyward bounced back to pin Khabraun Bailey of Stebbins in 3:59 to advance to the battle for third place.
The Division I district tournament will be held at Kettering’s Trent Arena beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, March 3 and continuing on Saturday, March 4 at 10 a.m.
In the first round of the district tournament Andrew Knick (36-5) will face freshman Tyrone Keeton (5-9) of West Carrollton.
Chad Craft (35-3) will face freshman Mike Ward (12-13) of Cincinnati Milford.
Chase Craft (38-1) will face junior Tristan Hostetter (23-14) of Piqua.
Josh Winston (26-14) will face senior Bo McIntosh (8-2) of Cincinnati Harrison.
Gabe Newburg (30-4) will face senior Andrew Hauer (24-14) of Mason.
Dylan Moran (28-7) will face freshman Wade Humphrey (13-22) of Springboro.
Bryan Heyward (17-8) will face junior Antonio McCloud (39-2) of Cincinnati Elder.
Chuck Saul (27-9) will face senior Braden Brown (15-17) of Springboro.
