COLUMBUS — Only one of Northmont’s three qualifiers placed in the state tournament held Thursday through Saturday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University.

Chase Craft placed 8th in the 126 pound weight class while freshman Andrew Knick (113 pounds) and senior Chad Craft (120 pounds) didn’t fare quite as well.

Knick opened the tournament by scoring a 5-1 decision over Jacob Sherman of Lewis Center Olentangy. Chad Craft lost a 9-7 decision in overtime to Jack Gorman of Aurora. Chase Craft scored a 13-1 major decision against Jihad Salti of Olmsted Falls.

“With the brackets we got we thought we could go 3-0 on Thursday, but we had never won all of our first round matches before,” said Northmont Coach Scott Newburg. “We won the first matches and Chad was ahead in the third period and got tied up and it went into overtime. He got taken down with 30 seconds to go in overtime to lose 9-7. We went 2-1 but they were all good matches.”

Chad Craft bounced back with a 9-2 decision over Justin Rodriguez of Columbus Whetsone.

In the championship quarterfinals Knick lost by fall (5:52) Bryce Hepner of Lakewood St. Edward. Hepner would go on to take second place in the tournament.

Chase Craft lost a 15-5 major decision to Derek Sharp of Marysville.

“Chase and Andrew both lost their quarterfinal match while Chad won his first consolation match to get back in,” Newburg noted. “At the state tournament, in order to place, you have to win two matches somewhere in the bracket – either in the championship bracket or in consolation. We lost two of the three matches, but Chase won his match to comeback to get into the low placement round for eighth place.”

Knick got eliminated in the second round of consolation losing by a fall (4:28) to Gabriel Tagg of Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Tagg would finish third overall.

Chad Craft also suffered elimination when he lost a 4-2 decision to Logan Heil of Brunswick.

Chase Craft scored a 3-1 decision over Jovan Fuqua of Cincinnati Princeton to advance to the consolation quarterfinals where he lost by a fall (1:54) to Joshua Breeding of Elyria. In the battle for seventh place Chase lost by a fall (1:36) to Jordan Ward of Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller to take 8th place overall.

“Chase lost to Ward of Moeller, a kid that he had lost to the week before at district, but he did a good job and got eighth place – the second time he has placed at state in the four years of his high school career. He was also a three-time state qualifier,” Newburg added. “Chad placed once at state and is a three-time state qualifier. Andrew Knick is a freshman and did a great job getting to state and winning his first match. He ended up losing matches to wrestlers that finished second and third, so the guys that he lost to were tough kids. All in all the guys did a great job. I was pleased with their efforts. Once you get to state everybody wants to place but it is just so tough that if you are not on your game, it’s not going to happen.”
