KETTERING — The Division I district wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at Kettering’s Trent Arena proved to be a tough test for local athletes.

Of the eight Northmont wrestlers that qualified for district only three survived to advance to state.

Freshman Andrew Knick qualified at 113 pounds while senior brother Chad (120 pounds) and Chase Craft (126 pounds). All three earned third place in their respective weight classes.

Knick opened the tournament by scoring a pin (1:59) over Tyrone Keeton of West Carrollton. He went to score a 5-0 decision over senior Patrick Dillon of Lebanon before losing a 7-5 decision to freshman Logan Hoskins of Butler. Knick bounced back with a 5-2 decision over Mason Kleinberg of Springboro in the consolation semifinal and scored a 7-2 decision over Antoine Allen of La Salle to capture third place.

In the 120 pound bracket Chad Craft opened the district tourney by pinning Max Ward of Milford in 1:13. He also won by a fall (3:06) in the quarterfinal against John Carraher of Colerain. In the semifinal match Craft lost close 2-1 decision to Colin Schuster of Mason. In the consolation semifinal Chad scored an 11-1 major decision over Jacob Bernhardt of Harrison. In the battle for third place Chad scored a 4-2 decision over Jabari Thomas of Fairfield.

The 126 pound bracket saw Chase Craft open with a 16-1 technical fall against Tristan Hostetter of Piqua. Chase followed with a 5-2 decision over Jovan Fuqua of Princeton before losing a 1-0 decision to Jordan Ward of Moller in the semifinal. In the consolation semifinal Chase scored a 2-0 decision over Drew Saunier of Springboro. He then faced Fuqua again in the third place match where Chase scored a 7-4 decision.

Chad Craft is a returning state placer. Last year he placed 6th in the 113 pound weight class. Chase Craft is also a returning state placer. In 2015 he placed 8th, also at 113 pounds.

At the state tournament Knick (40-6) will face sophomore Jacob Sherman (43-9) pf Lewis Center Olentangy in the first round.

Chad Craft (39-4) will open the state tournament against sophomore Jack Gorman (38-9) of Aurora.

Chase Craft (42-2) will face junior Jihad Salti (35-14) of Olmsted Falls in the first round.

The state tournament will be held March 9-11 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
