Girls golf team defeats Miamisburg

CLAYTON — Northmont’s girls golf team finished regular season play with a 202-209 victory over Miamisburg on their home course, Meadowbrook at Clayton last Thursday to take second place overall in the National West Division of the Greater Western Ohio Conference.

Lebanon took first place with a 14-1 season record with the Lady Bolts posting a 10-2 mark.

It was Senior Night when the Lady Bolts posted their victory over Miamisburg. Senior Ashley Singer and freshman Sam DeSpain both posted scores of 52 to help win the match.

“It was an exciting night for us,” said Northmont Coach Vivian Bibler. “We had a shotgun start so we had groups starting all over the course. Towards the end I knew we were getting close to winning and about nine strokes away from taking the match, but it was hard to determine with players so spread out.”

Senior Amara Tipple led Northmont with a 44 and senior Hannah Toth had a 54.

Northmont finished regular season play with six consecutive match victories. The Lady Bolts defeated Troy 197-221, Greenville 205-224, Piqua 203-243, Troy 188-200, Fairmont 203-220 and then Miamisburg with seven fewer strokes 202-209.

“We have been preparing this week for the sectional at Yankee Trace,” Bibler noted. “We are paired with Centerville, Tipp City and Fairborn, so we have some nice groups to play with. Of course, Centerville will push us to do our best.”

The Lady Elks took first place, yet again, in their division the National East with a perfect 15-0 record. Tipp City went 6-2 to win the American North.

“Centerville will probably throw out a score of 78 at sectional because they won’t need it,” Bibler said.

Centerville won the GWOC Postseason Tournament with a team score of 310 well ahead of second place Springboro’s total of 329. Centerville juniors Marissa Wenzler and Kayla Ramsey shot a 74 and 75 respectively while senior Megan Munn had an 80 and senior Molly Jasina had an 81.

After beating Fairmont and Beavercreek in regular season play both teams finished ahead of Northmont in the GWOC Postseason Tournament. Fairmont shot a 384 to place fourth and Beavercreek had a 404 to take fifth with Northmont sixth with a 413. In the preseason tournament the Lady Bolts placed fourth overall with Fairmont seventh and Beavercreek tenth.

“I think we have a really strong chance of making it out of the sectional tomorrow,” Bibler said. “We are all looking forward to that. Most of the girls played nine holes and some played 18 tonight after school and we are ready to go.”

A total of 17 teams will compete in the sectional at Yankee Trace on Wednesday, Oct. 4. By comparison the Cincinnati sectional will feature 37 teams.

“I am looking forward to tomorrow. I think it is going to be a great day for us,” Bibler added.
