Girls tennis team falls to Butler
VANDALIA — The Northmont Lady Bolts tennis team traveled across the dam to Vandalia on Tuesday seeking its first victory of the young season but ultimately fell 4-1.
At first singles, Butler’s Allison Baker defeated Lauren Kelsey 6-3, 6-0. The Aviators swept the singles matches with Xia Lin winning over Athaiah Peters 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Jo Velasco defeating Hailey Jenkins 6-0, 6-1.
Coach Christine Hall said the Bolts are rebuilding a bit after heavy graduation losses over the past couple of years.
“Lauren played at number two last year so its a big jump moving up to number one but she has worked hard all summer and is hoping to do well her senior year,” said Hall. “At second singles we have Athaiah who played second doubles last year – again that’s a big jump to make. Our third singles, Hailey Jenkins, just started playing in June. She ran cross country last year and has worked all summer and worked her way up the ladder but she’s very inexperienced.”
Butler won first doubles as Ashley Hess and Hannah Scarpelli defeated Ayana McCain and Ashton Slusher 6-2, 6-4.
At second doubles, Northmont’s Whitney White and Serenity Anderson edged Butler’ Rachel Burton and Erin Dean 7-5, 0-6, 7-6(4).
“Ayana McCain and Ashton Slusher have been on varsity for two years,” said Hall. “They are tall, strong girls and will play first doubles the next two years and keep getting better. At second doubles we have Whitney White and Serenity Anderson which hopefully makes us a little deeper at doubles than most of the teams we face. They have really good chemistry and I look for good things from them.”
