The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Golf Teams competed together in the 8th Annual Diana Schwab Mixed Invitational today at Beavercreek Golf Club. This event was hosted by Fairmont High School as a lasting tribute to Dayton native, and amateur golf legend, Diana Schwab. Mrs. Schwab was known as one of the toughest amateur, female competitors that the game of golf has ever known. In her later years, she worked tirelessly to run one of the most professional and difficult SWDAB Sectional Tournament sites in our area. Mrs. Schwab tragically lost her life in a fatal car accident several years ago. While she may be gone, her legacy and impact on amateur golf will certainly never be forgotten.
There was a unique format for today’s event. There were awards for both a boys team and a girls team champion. There was another award for the lowest combined boys and girls overall team champion. In all, nine schools participated in the 8th Annual Diana Schwab Invitational.
The boys’ teams competed on the front 9 holes of Beavercreek Golf Club. As a weather system moved through the area this afternoon, the humidity decreased, and scoring conditions were ideal. The Thunderbolts were led in scoring by junior David Richards who carded a personal best score of 37. David’s round included a birdie on the difficult par 4, 2nd hole, 6 pars, and 2 bogeys. Senior Cole Stephens cruised around in 39 strokes which included a birdie of his own on the long par 4, 3rd hole. Junior Alec Avdakov chipped in for birdie on the par 4, 9th hole, and recorded 4 additional pars on his way to a season best score of 40. Rounding out our team scoring today was sophomore Gavin Caras who continued his steady play with a score of 44. In his first varsity start of the 2017 campaign, junior Jackson Trottier posted a respectable total of 46. Junior Noah Thayer needed just only one more stroke than Jackson as he turned in a score of 47. Northmont’s Boys’ team score of 160 was good for a 1 stroke victory over Alter High School’s total of 161. This led to the Thunderbolts to the Boys’ Division Team Championship today! This is Northmont’s first Boys’ regular season Invitational Title since the 2009 Greenville Invitational.
The girls’ teams competed on the back 9 holes of Beavercreek Golf Club. Senior Amara Tipple led the Thunderbolts with a score of 43. Senior Hannah Toth added a sub 50 score of 46 today. Junior Delaney Schmidt posted a score of 53. Senior Ashley Singer and freshman Sam Despain both posted scores of 54 to round out the team scoring. Freshman Jaedin Bowers was just one stroke behind with a total of 55 today. The girls fought hard all day. Their team total of 196 was good for 6th place. Great job ladies!
Congratulations to Lebanon High School who took home the overall combined boys and girls team division title today. With a team score of 356, Northmont finished 4th out of 9 teams in the overall combined division.
Thank you to Fairmont High School for hosting a wonderful event. It is a privilege for the boys and girls from the same high school to take part in a tournament that has such a significant meaning and carries on the memory of a truly remarkable woman. The spirit of Mrs. Schwab was present with all 9 teams today, and we look forward to the 9th Annual Diana Schwab Mixed Invitational next season.
The varsity boys look to continue their winning ways when we face the Troy Trojans in our first home dual match of the season on Thursday at Meadowbrook at Clayton.
We will see you on the links! Go Bolts!
