The 2017 FireBolt Cup will take place on the beautiful links of Meadowbrook at Clayton Golf Course on Tuesday, September 26th. This event brings together GWOC opponents, Northmont High School and Fairmont High School, in a combined Varsity and JV Match. The FireBolt Cup began in 2010 as a way for coaches on both teams to see their players together on the golf course one final time before the end of the golf season. While there are other JV and Varsity contests scheduled after this event, it is a great way for two very competitive teams to play together leading up to the postseason and sectional tournaments. The varsity and junior varsity players from each team are paired together. This is a unique format for a high school golf match as varsity and JV matches are usually run independently from one another. The FireBolt Cup rotates venues each season. Last year, Fairmont hosted the FireBolt Cup at Beavercreek Golf Club (their varsity home course). This year, Northmont plays host to the event. In the first 6 FireBolt Cup contests, we took the best 8 out of 12 combined scores to crown a team champion. That format changed in 2016 when we transitioned to match play (Ryder Cup Singles Matches Style). Each match on the course is worth 1 point. The player winning that match will earn a point for his school. If a match is halved after 9 holes, each player will earn 1/2 point for his school team. There will be a total of 12 points available. Fairmont retained the FireBolt Cup in 2016 with a commanding 11-1 victory over Northmont. With the Cup being contested at Meadowbrook at Clayton this year, the Bolts would love to present the traveling trophy to new Athletic Director, Micah Harding, at our fall sports awards program in November. Something else that makes the FireBolt Cup a special event is the aforementioned trophy. The winning team gets to keep the trophy for an entire year after the event. The trophy is engraved each season with the results from the prior year.
The tee time for the 2017 FireBolt Cup or NorthFairMontMont Fall Classic (as the coaches have affectionately dubbed this event over the years) is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Tuesday.
We will see you on the links! Go Bolts!
