CENTERVILLE — The Varsity Boys’ Golf Team competed in the Southwest District Athletic Board Division 1 Sectional Golf Tournament Monday at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace.
Northmont battled hard all day for a 6th place overall team finish with a 346 total. Fairmont High School posted 337 to earn the 4th and final team invitation to the District Tournament. Also earning team invitations were Centerville (300), Springboro (314), and Lebanon (336).
Leading the way for the Thunderbolts was senior Cole Stephens. After going out in 41 strokes on the Heritage side, Stephens made three birdies on the Legends (par 5, twelfth, par 4, fourteenth, and par 4, seventeenth) to close with 39 for a total of 80.
“Cole’s score boosted him into contention for a solo birth in the District Tournament next week,” said Northmont Coach Nathan Hannahan. “We had to wait two hours after the Bolts finished today for all scores to come in and for Cole to receive his invitation to Glenview. Cole was the third individual, not on an advancing team, to qualify for the District Tournament. Congratulations to Cole for being our first district qualifier in the past seven seasons!”
Other individuals to make it out today were Tyler Goecke (69) of Carroll, Austin Greaser (78) of Butler, and Michael Brandt (83) of Butler.
T-Bolt Junior David Richards’ bid to make it out as an individual fell 4 strokes short when he posted 87 after closing in 42 strokes on the Legends course. Junior Noah Thayer was just two strokes behind Richards with a total of 89. Junior Alec Avdakov carded a score of 90. Sophomore Gavin Caras added a score of 93 today.
“After finishing nine strokes away from an outright team invitation, Northmont will be hungry to compete in this event again in 2018,” Hannahan said. “What makes 2018 seem even more promising is that Northmont will have four of five participants in this year’s SWDAB Sectional Team returning next season. Northmont’s team total of 346 was 19 strokes better than our 365 performance in 2016. The 2017 Varsity Boys’ Golf Team has made many strides forward and we look to continue this trend of success next season!”
All that aside, the team is proud to have one its own move on to district play.
“Cole is eager to participate in the District Tournament next Thursday at Glenview Golf Course. He will have the support of his teammates as well as the Northmont Community when we travel to Cincinnati on October 12,” Hannahan added.
