Coed Varsity Swimming · Troy Squeaks Past Northmont

On Friday, January 5, Troy High School hosted Northmont’s swim team for a dual meet.  Northmont’s swimmers made a strong showing, and Northmont’s boys’ team won against Troy’s boys.  However, at end of the evening, Troy’s girls had pulled enough ahead that Troy won the meet with an overall score of 171 to Northmont’s 166.

In the 200 yard medley relay, Northmont’s boys’ relay teams placed both first (with Josiah English, Justin Parrett, Justin DeLano, and Bobby Gaylor) and third (with Eric Woods, Joey McKarns, Jonah Mergler, and Mitchell Asbury).  In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the boys placed both second (Woods, McKarns, Mergler, and Asbury) and third (with Roberto Calderon, Caleb Danielak, Jonah Scoville, and Vincent Moniaci).  In the 400 yard freestyle relay, English, Parrett, DeLano, and Gaylor’s team placed second.

Northmont girls placed second in the 200 yard medley relay with the team of Abby Gutierrez, Fynn Roberts, Isabel Stoffel, and Olivia Jones.  In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the girls’ team of Isabel Stoffel, Jordan Rife, Jasmine Johnston, and Pheobe Caraway placed second.  Northmont’s girls placed both first (Caraway, Gutierrez, Jones, and Roberts) and third (Olivia Mayl, Johnston, Rife, and Lindsey Dresnek) in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Both boys and girls had several top three finishes in their individual races.  In the first individual race of the evening, the 200 yard freestyle, both Abby Gutierrez and Josiah English placed third.  They also both placed second later in the evening in the 500 yard freestyle, which is a 20 lap race.

In the 200 yard individual medley, Northmont’s Fynn Roberts took first place for the girls, and Justin Parrett took first for the boys.  They both also took first place in the 100 yard breaststroke.   Team captains Isabel Stoffel and Justin DeLano took first place in the 100 yard butterfly.  DeLano went on to take first place in the 100 yard backstroke, as well.

Northmont also had good showings in the shorter freestyle races.  In the 50 yard freestyle, Olivia Jones took second and Pheobe Caraway, third, for the girls.  Bobby Gaylor placed second in the boys’ race.  In the 100 yard freestyle, Caraway placed second and Jones took third.  Gaylor took second in that one, while Northmont’s Mitchell Asbury placed third.

Later in the evening, Asbury went on to place third in the 100 yard backstoke.  Jonah Mergler placed third in the 100 yard butterfly.  Team Captain Eric Woods took third in the 500 yard freestyle.  For the girls, Lindsey Dresnek placed third in the 100 yard backstroke, and Allison Jackson took second in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Northmont will swim again this weekend at West Carrollton YMCA for the Southwest Classic Invitational.
