Northmont lost a lot of size and a ton of talent but this year’s team is ready to continue the winning tradition. The Bolts will have a different look this season but it appears to be another successful run. The team will be carried by experienced hitters: junior Sam Diller and seniors Devin Blankenship and Derek Koester. Blankenship is the returning “big man” that helped guide the team to the state semifinals in 2018 and we expect him to play an even bigger role for the offense in 2019. There are a couple new guys that will be running the offense and feeding these hitters. Aaron Sampson is a junior setter with a lot of volleyball experience and Eli Mosher is a talented freshman setter with a lot of confidence and high expectations.
The Thunderbolts look to present one of the best defensive rosters in the area. The defense will be carried by seniors David Vennemeyer and Breckin Johnston along with freshman Dominic Smith. Vennemeyer is the returning starting libero. He is our spark plug and our leader. Johnston is a returning varsity player and has improved to be one of the best defensive players in the area. Smith is a freshman but he brings 4 years of national team experience and a lot of athleticism. Together, these three players are a force in the back row.
The team’s success will depend heavily on the growth of our young talent. Several freshmen are going to play important roles for the varsity team this year. Freshmen Eli Mosher and Dominic Smith were teammates for club this winter and they will remain teammates as starters for the varsity team this spring. Athletic newcomers, Parker Bickel and Jordan Anderson will join senior, Matt Campbell, as varsity middle hitters. Collin Enochs will also look to get some varsity playing time in that position. These young players have a lot of potential. They will grow and improve throughout the season.
The Northmont volleyball program has a lot of new, young talent including Parker Grundish, Conner Vitols, Jesse Benton and Sam Mohler along with upper-classmen, Owen Norman, Zach Custer and Aron Lewis.
The 2019 season will begin with a home tri-match on Friday, March 22 (v. Alter at 5:00pm and Centerville at 7:00pm).
