The Thunderbolt Academic Challenge team traveled to Virginia Tech University on Saturday to compete in the Virginia Tech Fall Kick-Off Tournament. Northmont’s varsity team this year consists of three freshmen (Samantha Street, Sean Scranton and Amara Nwanoro) along with sophomore Athena Dobles and senior Ryan Laing.
The team came home in 3rd place out of 24 teams in Virginia, knocking off national top 100 teams from West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina along the way. This performance qualified Northmont for BOTH the NAQT national championship tournament in Atlanta in May, as well as the PACE national championship in Washington DC in June!
“Our team was ranked preseason #8 in Ohio, but given this strong performance out of the gate I could easily see us being top 3 or 4 by May,” said Academic Challenge coach David Jones. “I would have been thrilled qualifying to either of those events at any point during the season, and really didn’t expect such a young team to have so much success this early. Future events this season will go towards improving our seeding at nationals.”
Congratulations to the Northmont Academic Challenge Team on another stellar performance!
